Is your little one celebrating a special day soon? Children’s parties offer lots of scope to get imaginative but getting everything organised can leave parents feeling frazzled rather than enjoying the process of preparing for their child’s party. To help you out we’ve put together some easy ideas that are easy on the wallet and low on labour.
DIY birthday cakes
You don’t need to be a master cake decorator to create something colourful and unique as the centerpiece for your party table. Cheat by buying a ready-made madeira cake and covering with ready-to-roll icing. Use alphabet cookie cutters to cut out your child’s name in different coloured icing and paste onto the top of the cake. Dot the rest of the cake with brightly coloured sweets such as Smarties or Liquorice Allsorts. Add a final show-stopper in the shape of our mini sparklers which will give your cake a real ‘wow’ factor when you dim the lights and bring your cake to the table.
Few children can resist the lure of a cake-stand heaving with colourful cupcakes. Younger children will adore our Dear Zoo cake accessories, including a stand, cases and cake picks. Decorate your cakes with different coloured icing and top with sprinkles and sweets. Or make extra big cupcakes (use muffin case holders to go larger) and spell out your child’s name by adding an initial to each cake – you can do this easily by studding iced cakes with silver balls in the shape of each letter.
Easy party tea
If you’re looking to minimize mess and avoid waste making up party lunchboxes is an alternative option to the traditional table spread. Many a party ends with plates of untouched sandwiches and carrot batons, so keep things simple by making up boxes filled with a sandwich, packet of crisps, cocktail sausage or cheese snack. Swap mountains of biscuits and cakes for bowls of jelly or tubs of ice-cream to keep things traditional, before you roll out your birthday cake. The Dear Zoo range includes lunchboxes and all the other table ware you might need, such as napkins, paper cups and bowls. If you have an older girl you might like to check out the Vintage Rose range, a pretty-in-pink range featuring delicate rosebuds and polka dots.
Unusual party bags
Give your party bags a unique touch by not actually using party bags! There’s no rule that says you have to use the standard plastic versions, so why not be a little more creative? How about filling old-school candy-stripe paper bags with traditional sweets such as Love Hearts and Sherbet Dip Dabs, for example. Add in an extra treat – a traditional-style yo-yo, for example or a tube of our pink heart bubbles. For something totally different how about using one of our plastic dinos or piggies as a receptacle for mini treats, which your guests can keep afterwards? They look great filled with Jelly Babies, Dolly Mixtures and other small pieces, such as novelty erasers, mini pencils or plastic jewellery.
Stress-free thank you notes
If you struggle to get your children to write their thank-you notes get them done in advance. They don’t have to write an essay but it’s important to say thank you in some small way. Why not add a luggage tag to your party bags, with a short note of thanks inscribed? Little girls will love our pretty butterfly tags, or we have more unisex plain white tags too – an easy way to thank guests for sharing in your child’s special day.
