If you’ve been limping through the winter you’ll no doubt be counting down the days until the first spring holiday of the year. With just a few weeks left until Easter, here at Neviti we can’t wait to kick back for a few days and – fingers crossed – enjoy some warm spring sunshine. This bank holiday is made for venturing outdoors, spending quality family time together and, of course, eating lots of chocolate and other delicious delights!
If you’re looking for activities to do with your little ones over the break, we have some exciting new craft products, ideal for sparking some creativity in the school holidays. Spend a morning preparing for the egg hunt with some DIY colour in egg baskets, perfect for collecting all those yummy eggs. Made from sturdy white card and illustrated with a selection of spring scenes to colour in, they’re an easy way to get creative and make something a little more unique than a shop-bought basket. The range also includes some colour-in bunting which children can add their own creative touches to. A well as colouring it in, you could customise your bunting with some extra sparkle using glitter or stick on gems…a lovely way to decorate your home this bank holiday weekend.
Have you seen our lovely ‘Fancy That’ range? With a quirky, vintage flavour reminiscent of the 1950s, this colourful collection makes the perfect backdrop if you’re planning a fun celebration for Mother’s Day. Taking place on 15th March this year, it’s always a nice opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to your mum, and although a card and a bunch of flowers is always an appreciated gesture, why not do something a little different this year? A surprise gathering doesn’t have to be a big scale party but getting the extended family together makes for a memorable event. Get everyone to contribute a small dish or a tub of cakes and you have the makings of a lovely afternoon, with great company and something delicious on the menu. Take a little care over your table settings and your gathering will really make her smile!
The TV event of the late summer has started – yes, we’re talking about Great British Bake Off, so to honour the start of this hugely popular show, this week’s blog is all about cake! With the show regularly pulling in over 8 million viewers, GBBO has quickly become an institution and is BBC2’s most popular show in 10 years. Of course, the format is a winning mix and there can’t be anyone out there who doesn’t love Marry Berry and her references to ‘soggy bottoms’, but its popularity also shows that we really have become a nation of bakers in the UK in recent years, and that whipping up batches of cupcakes, perfecting our biscuit dough and turning out hands to show-stopping celebration cakes is something many of us do on a weekly basis.
To support this increasing interest, there are some amazing cake decorations and accessories out there to feed our obsession. From shops that source original, vintage cake moulds, stands and crockery, to online retailers that can supply a rainbow assortment of sprinkles and decorations, it’s never been easier to find inspiration for our cake-making activities. Here at Neviti we have some lovely baking accessories you can choose from, including easy-to-assemble cardboard cake stands, an easy, low-coast way to display your creations. There are ranges for children’s parties, baby showers and christenings, as well as a versatile option from our Vintage Rose range that can be used for a variety of occasions. They make the perfect home for smaller cakes and other sweet fancies, and can be co-ordinated with the cake cases we also have in these ranges. As Mary and co often remind their guests, presentation is important so this is an easy way to make sure your creations not only taste delicious but look special too.
If you’re looking to expand your cake-making repertoire, why not follow in the footsteps of the GBBO contestants by trying the recipes on the BBC’s dedicated website? You’ll find classics from Mary Berry’s back catalogue as well as more challenging recipes, inspired by the contestants’ ‘show stoppers’. But don’t worry if your skills are still developing. You can keep in the comfort zone of making simple sponges and cupcakes, but perhaps add an unexpected but easy twist. Throw in some unusual flavouring to your bakes, for example, or ice them in unexpected colours. You could try making a rainbow marble cake sponge, a great way to surprise your guests and particularly good for children’s parties.
If you’re trying to keep things healthy but still love your cakes, take a look at websites such as Deliciously Ella and Hemsley & Hemsley where you can find sugar-free goodies that satisfy your sweet tooth without the guilt, and include healthy ingredients such as raw cocoa (chocolate that is actually good for you!), vegetables and natural sweeteners. We love the look of the Choc-Beet Fudge Cakes on Hemsley & Hemsley that make a great alternative to standard cupcakes and are a healthy addition to your party table. Pop them in one of our cake cases and add a cake topper and you have some homemade treats that looks amazing and has added health benefits – what’s not to love?!
If you’ve got a child’s party coming up, it’s all about the cake and we have baking accessories you can choose from to give your presentation lots of colour and charm. Younger children will love the Dear Zoo range, which includes a bold, two-layer cake stand, cake cases and animal cake picks, all decorated with the instantly recognisable characters from Rod Campbell’s classic book. Ranges for older children include the charming ‘Tree Top Friends’ collection, perfect for older girls, and ‘Dino Island’, a great choice for little adventurers of both sexes.
If you don’t have a specific celebration coming up, use the excuse of an afternoon tea party to show off your baking skills. Invite some friends over for a low-key get together of tea, bubbly and a selection of your cakes to wow them with. Be inspired by the nostalgia of a vintage tea party and dress your table with your best table cloth, some proper china and some vintage cake forks. Let your cakes do most of the talking but perhaps add in some co-ordinating extras; some floral Vintage Rose napkins, for example, rose-patterned glass holders for your champagne flutes and some polka-dot bunting to really bring out the nostalgic feel of a classic afternoon tea. Finding a reason to eat cake is never a bad idea!
